Taking Learning Beyond the Classroom
Today, the Flamingo English Class in the Dominican Republic, led by their dedicated teacher Alise Cole, took their learning beyond the classroom walls to make a real difference in their community. Instead of their usual lessons, the students rolled up their sleeves for a community clean-up in the local park.
The Importance of Responsibility
The initiative began with the teacher explaining the significance of keeping public spaces clean and the harmful effects of improper waste disposal. She highlighted how such practices lead to sanitary issues and pollution, urging the students to take action for their community. The children immediately stepped up, asking for bags to start collecting trash.
Enthusiasm and Team Spirit
With energy and excitement, the children turned the clean-up into a fun competition, eagerly comparing how many bags of garbage they filled and emptied. Their joy and determination were inspiring—there wasn’t a single complaint, just a shared sense of accomplishment and pride.
Overcoming Challenges Together
Despite financial challenges, such as the high cost of gloves (10 pesos each, not per pair), the students showed resilience and dedication. After their hard work, they washed their hands and enjoyed a well-earned glass of cold soda, leaving the park spotless and ready for future visitors.
A Teacher’s Pride
Alise expressed her admiration for her students, saying, “They are such great children, always willing to lend a helping hand. I’m so proud to have them as my students.”
Inspiring Lessons for All This act of community service reminds us of the importance of teaching responsibility and taking small steps to make a big impact. A huge round of applause to Ms. Cole and her incredible students for leading by example and showing us what can be achieved when a group of young, determined individuals come together for a common cause.
