Dominican Starfish Foundation: A Decade of Impact
Along with our other projects, the Dominican Starfish Foundation has been aiding women and girls in the Dominican Republic for over 10 years. Through our educational sponsorship program at the Youth Upliftment School, we’ve encountered countless tragic stories. One story that deeply moved us was that of Marilou, a 13-year-old orphan.
Marilou's Story: A Catalyst for Change
Marilou's life has been marred by abuse and hardship. As an orphan, she was passed from relative to relative and endured severe mistreatment, including a broken arm inflicted by an aunt. Deportation policies in the Dominican Republic further complicated her life, leading to her being sent back to Haiti—a nation in turmoil.
In Haiti, Marilou faced even more horrifying ordeals, including repeated sexual abuse. Her resilience and bravery in the face of such trauma prompted her teacher, Kate Bateman, to take a stand. With the support of the Dominican Starfish Foundation, Marilou was rescued and brought back to the Dominican Republic, where she now lives with Kate and 19 other children in crisis.

A New Beginning: Building a Shelter for Girls
Marilou's ordeal underscored the urgent need for a women’s and girls’ shelter. Thanks to our generous donors, we raised the necessary funds to purchase land for this project in just one day. While we work towards building this facility, Marilou and others like her find temporary refuge with compassionate caregivers.
The Struggle Continues: Maniphca and Daphcalie's Story
Maniphca, a top student at the Youth Upliftment School, and her younger sister Daphcalie have also faced significant challenges. Their mother abandoned them, and their father, who prioritized their education despite struggling in Haiti, sent them to live with a woman in the Dominican Republic. Sadly, this woman mistreated them, often beating them or making them kneel on a cheese grater.
Despite these hardships, the girls have shown incredible resilience. As we await the completion of our new shelter. These girls also live in the very crowded home of Kate Bateman, where she now cares for over 20 children in need.
